Taxi Driver Tales: Lost In Translation

Being a taxi driver is never dull. Every journey brings a new conversation or story—some heartwarming, some bizarre, and others downright hilarious. Here’s one tale from a Cresta Car driver who learned that the art of communication can sometimes take you to unexpected places.

It was a regular Tuesday evening, and Mark, a seasoned taxi driver for Cresta Cars, was on his usual shift. His last job of the night was a tourist from the Netherlands, who had just landed at Manchester Airport. The man, carrying a suitcase the size of a small car, climbed into the backseat and handed Mark his phone.

“Take me here,” the man said in heavily accented English, pointing to the map on his phone. Mark squinted at the address, which seemed straightforward enough, and nodded confidently.

The journey started off smoothly. The passenger, eager to practise his English, asked Mark about football Wrexham Football Club, the weather, and what “mushy peas” were. But about 15 minutes in, things took a turn—literally.

Mark glanced at his GPS and noticed it was leading him off the main road. The route seemed odd, but hey, technology is rarely wrong… right?

After winding through increasingly narrow lanes, Mark arrived at the destination: a dimly lit, empty field in the middle of nowhere. Confused, he turned to his passenger, who looked equally baffled.

“Is this… where you wanted to go?” Mark asked hesitantly.

The dutch man stared at his phone, then at the field, then back at Mark. “This… this not hotel?”

“Nope,” Mark replied. “Unless it’s a very minimalist hotel with no walls, no roof, and a lot of grass.”

They both burst out laughing as they realised the address had auto-corrected to a similar-sounding village in the middle of the countryside.

After sharing a hearty chuckle, Mark reset the GPS and assured the passenger he’d get him to the actual hotel. The man thanked him profusely, promising to leave a glowing review for Cresta Cars on Google.

Mark eventually dropped the tourist off at the correct location, a local hotel that was decidedly not in a field. As the man got out of the car, he turned to Mark and said with a grin, “Next time, I use Google better!”

This story is a reminder that even the best technology isn’t foolproof, and sometimes, life’s detours make for the funniest memories. For Mark, it was just another day in the life of a taxi driver—a day that ended with a great tip and a story worth retelling.
